500 festival Kickoff to May
The 500 Festival welcomes the magical month of May with the annual 500 Festival Kickoff to May event at Monument Circle. From the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon to the IPL 500 Festival Parade, the excitement of May is a non-stop, month-long celebration that leads up to the Indianapolis 500.
The celebration starts with the arrival of the Chevy #FestivalCars. Mayor Hogsett, along with executives from the 500 Festival and Indianapolis Motor Speedway welcome attendees in a brief ceremony. Then the Month of May is officially kicked off, like only Indianapolis could do. From Indianapolis Colts Punter, Pat McAfee, to the Indy Eleven, to our most lovable mascots, you never know WHO will kickoff the Month of May or HOW they’ll do it! After the event, the community can enjoy food from some of Indy’s favorite food trucks, pick up prizes from exhibitors, get photos with the Festival Cars and more! This event is free and open to the public.
In 2017, we kicked off the month of May with a Indiana’s most popular mascots. Axel (Indianapolis Motor Speedway), Boomer (Indiana Pacers), the Firestone Firehawk, Freddy Fever (Indiana Fever), Nitro (Indy Fuel), Rowdie (Indianapolis Indians), and Zeke (Indy Eleven) raced down Meridian Street on tricycles in the Mascot 500, a slightly slower rendition of the Indianapolis 500. Numerous Indianapolis business and civic leaders were on hand for special ceremony just prior to noon. Food trucks, 500 Festival Princesses and other notable guests joined the celebration as we fueled up and started our engines for the greatest month-long celebration in the world.
