
Events Internship, Spring 2012

The ideal candidate for this position should possess strong written and verbal communication skills. This person should have a strong desire to be a team player with exceptional organizational and computer skills. The candidate must be proactive with various details of the events and have a strong work ethic. Academic training in recreation, meeting planning, marketing, tourism, special events or related fields is recommended.
The candidate must also be flexible and willing to put in additional hours as needed prior to and especially during the month of May for all of the 500 Festival events. This would include the ability to work up to 14 hours per day and 80 hours per week during peak event times.
Special note:
Manual labor will be involved in this job, so please be sure you are able and willing to do manual labor before responding to this opportunity. Examples include moving water containers, large signs, tables, chairs and other event type items.
Specific responsibilities:
Coordinate, organize and contribute to Mini-Marathon Expo, Kids’ Day, Rookie Run, Community Day, Memorial Service, Mini-Marathon Post Race Party and assist with other events as needed.

Manage and organize more than 120 entertainment groups that will perform at the 5K and Mini-Marathon events.

Promote the Spirit Squad competition of High School Cheerleaders along the Mini-Marathon course.

Assist in the coordination of the Mini-Marathon Two-Day Race Expo prior to the event.

Work with event professionals and volunteers to orchestrate information and timelines of events.

Help to create a positive event experience for all participants, sponsors and volunteers.

Assist in creating and maintaining accurate event records.
Learning Outcomes: Database management, attention to detail and creativity
Assist with committee meetings and disseminate meeting minutes.
Learning Outcomes: Listening and small-group discussion
Stipend:
The intern will receive a monthly stipend of $800 per month for a 40 hour work week. Any hours worked under a 40 hour work week will be rated using the above scale.

College credit:
The 500 Festival will work with any educational institution to ensure that the intern receives proper credit for their experience. This includes any forms, documentation or correspondence with the internship coordinator that is required or necessary.
