
Mini-Marathon Event Internship, Spring 2012
40 hours per week requested
January 9 – June 1, 2012

The ideal candidate for this position will be looking for a career in the field of event planning and is taking classes or already has had some special event planning experience. The candidate will be working to produce the nation’s largest half-marathon and all the events supporting the half-marathon, in addition to helping with coordination of the Snakepit Ball and Training Series. This person needs to be multi-task oriented with superior organizational skills, customer relations experience, a great attitude and strong written and verbal communications skills. It is our preference that the Mini-Marathon Intern does not take classes concurrently with this internship.
The candidate must also be flexible and willing to put in additional hours as needed prior to and especially during the month of May for all of the 500 Festival events. This would include the ability to work up to 14 hours per day and 80 hours per week during peak event times.
Special note:
Manual labor will be involved in this job, so please be sure you are able and willing to do manual labor before responding to this opportunity. Examples include moving water containers, large signs, tables, chairs and other event type items.
Specific responsibilities:
Assist in the coordination of Snakepit Ball and the following Mini-Marathon events: Mini-Marathon, 5K, Mini-Marathon Expo, Post Race Party and Training Series.
Learning Outcomes: Event planning, communications, teamwork and problem-solving
Assist in the coordination of the Snakepit Ball and handling all ticket sales and orders.
Learning Outcomes: Event planning, sales and customer service
Responsible for answering all questions posed by participants and committee members regarding the events listed.
Learning Outcomes: Verbal communication and customer relations
Coordinate the Elite Participant segment of the Mini-Marathon.
Learning Outcomes: Leadership, communication and organization
Coordinate written and verbal event details to Executive Board and Volunteer Committees.
Learning Outcomes: Written and verbal communication and leadership
Assist with committee meetings and dissemination of meeting minutes for the Mini-Marathon and Snakepit Ball.
Learning Outcomes: Listening and small group discussion
Assist in coordinating the Training Series.
Learning Outcomes: Event planning, logistics and problem-solving
Coordinate distribution of Mini-Marathon awards and prize money.
Learning Outcomes: Communication and organization
Stipend:
The intern will receive a monthly stipend of $800 per month for a 40 hour work week. Any hours worked under a 40 hour work week will be rated using the above scale.

College credit:
The 500 Festival will work with any educational institution to ensure that the intern receives proper credit for their experience. This includes any forms, documentation or correspondence with the internship coordinator that is required or necessary.
