
Public Relations Internship, Spring 2012

Supervisor: Megan Bulla, Communications Manager
The ideal candidate for this position will possess strong written and oral communication, organizational skills, creativity, initiative and the ability to manage multiple tasks for various 500 Festival departments. This position will allow the candidate to interact with media for story placement, in addition to fulfillment of media promotions. The Marketing and Communications team functions as the internal public relations agency for the 500 Festival creating communication plans and strategies for all of its events. The candidate shall excel in teamwork and creative collaboration with both external partners and internal departments and demonstrate a high level of enthusiasm and customer service. Public Relations, Marketing, Communications or Journalism, major is preferred, along with knowledge of AP style, effective branding practices and photography.
The candidate must also be flexible and willing to put in additional hours as needed prior to and especially during the month of May for all of the 500 Festival events. This would include the ability to work up to 14 hours per day and 80 hours per week during peak event times.
Special note:
Manual labor will be involved in this job, so please be sure you are able and willing to do manual labor before responding to this opportunity. Examples include moving water containers, large signs, tables, chairs and other event type items.
Specific responsibilities:
Assist with day-to-day media relations and public relations, including writing news releases and media advisories, making calls to media and media fulfillment.

Assist with implementing communication plans and projects, including creation of marketing collateral, copy writing, photography and editing.
Learning objectives: Written and oral communication, creativity, design, editing and branding
Assist in the development and writing of the Month of May Guide and the IPL 500 Festival Parade scripts.
Learning Objectives: Written and oral communication, customer service and teamwork
Assist with 500 Festival social media outreach including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and more.
Learning Objective: Written communication, keeping up-to-date on the latest technology
Assist with updating content on the 500 Festival website and writing various event newsletters.
Learning Objective: Writing for the web, HTML coding and database management
Provide support for special events and news conferences.
Learning objectives: Event planning, problem-solving, photography and interpersonal skills
Assist with coordination of the 500 Festival speakers’ bureau.
Learning objectives: Customer service, public relations and community relations
Maintain media results report and clip files.
Learning objectives: Organization, leadership and initiative
Stipend:
The intern will receive a monthly stipend of $800 per month for a 40 hour work week. Any hours worked under a 40 hour work week will be rated using the above scale.

College credit:
The 500 Festival will work with any educational institution to ensure that the intern receives proper credit for their experience. This includes any forms, documentation or correspondence with the internship coordinator that is required or necessary.
