
Volunteer/Education Program Internship, Spring 2010
40 hours per week requested
January 10 – June 10, 2011

The ideal candidate for this position should possess strong written and verbal communication skills, and a desire to encourage recruitment, retention and recognition of our volunteer base of more than 7,000. The candidate should have a strong desire to work within a team environment, strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills and the ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment.
The candidate must also be flexible and willing to put in additional hours as needed prior to and especially during the month of May for all of the 500 Festival events. This would include the ability to work up to 14 hours per day and 80 hours per week during peak event times.
Special note:
Manual labor will be involved in this job, so please be sure you are able and willing to do manual labor before responding to this opportunity. Examples include moving water containers, large signs, tables, chairs and other event type items.
Specific responsibilities:
Assist in aspects of coordination and recruitment of volunteers for all 500 Festival events.
Learning Outcomes: Coordination of event details, marketing to companies and individuals and planning orientations
Coordinate projects, organization and set-up of Family Fun Nights.
Learning Outcomes: Event planning and communication skills
Coordinate annual Volunteer Recognition Day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Learning Outcomes: Event planning and creative skills
Work to orchestrate information and placement of volunteers at all 500 Festival events.
Learning Outcomes: Leadership, problem-solving and organization
Help to create a positive volunteer experience for all participants to encourage retention of volunteers.
Learning Outcomes: Teamwork and interpersonal and communication skills
Assist in creating and maintaining accurate volunteer records.
Learning Outcomes: Database management and attention to detail
Assist with committee meetings and dissemination of meeting minutes.
Learning Outcomes: Listening and small group discussion
Assist in managing the Education Program with 4th grade students from around the state.
Learning Outcomes: Attention to detail, organization and communication
Assist in aspects of coordination and recruitment of volunteers for all Education Program study trips and all other events.
Learning Outcomes: Coordination of event details, leadership and problem solving
Stipend:
The intern will receive a monthly stipend of $800 per month for a 40 hour work week. Any hours worked under a 40 hour work week will be rated using the above scale.

College credit:
The 500 Festival will work with any educational institution to ensure that the intern receives proper credit for their experience. This includes any forms, documentation or correspondence with the internship coordinator that is required or necessary.
